TONY BENN, MICHAEL WOOD AND DIARMUID GAVIN HEADLINE PEAK AUTUMN FESTIVAL 2007

The organisers of Countrybookshop Peak Festival are particularly happy to welcome Tony Benn, who will be
launching the festival on 18th of October by presenting his next set of diaries, from 2001 to 2007. This
starts off a series of daily author events from the 18th to 28th October including the BBC television presenter
of ‘A Story of India’, Michael Wood; Everest climber, Stephen Venables; travel adventurer, Jay Griffiths; Gervase
Phinn talking about his new book; Curry Club Founder, Pat Chapman, with a cookery demonstration; Charlotte Mosley,
accompanied by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, with an illustrated talk on the Mitford letters; Rudyard
Kipling’s India from Charles Allen; Agatha Christie’s biographer, Laura Thompson and Neil Warnock, Sheffield
United Manager.
Other events at Country Bookshop this year include, in October, Yann Martel with the illustrator, Tomislav
Torjanac, who are celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Booker Prize winning ‘Life of Pi’ and Radio 1 DJ,
Tony Blackburn and in November Cricket manager, Duncan Fletcher.
Peak Festival dinner at Hassop Hall this autumn will be on Tuesday 13th November with BBC Gardener’s World
presenter Diarmuid Gavin. The final event for November will be from Clarissa Dickson Wright with her
no-holds-barred autobiography on 20th November.
On Saturday 1st December - the Peak Festival hosts the annual ‘afternoon with local authors’ by welcoming
the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire to Country Bookshop along with many other local authors who will sign
and dedicate their books. The Peak District Book of the Year short-listed authors will be named on that
day and on Thursday 20th December the winner will be announced by Gervase Phinn.

About Peak Festival
The Peak Spring and Autumn literary festivals are held annually in the Peak District National Park, the second
most visited national park in the world with over 22 million visitors per year. The Spring Festival is held in
May/June and the Autumn Festival in October/ November. Events are held at historic venues to include
Countrybookshop at the 19th century Hassop Railway Station, Chatsworth House and Hassop Hall. Various international and local writers discuss their work at the festival and the events include a literary lunch and a dinner. The Peak District Book of the Year Award is also presented as part of the festival. Authors who have appeared at the Peak Festival and Countrybookshop events include Sir John Major, Sir Mark Tully and Dame Ellen MacArthur.
