Author Information
Kev Reynolds, author of this guide, is a freelance writer, photojournalist and lecturer who lives in the Kent countryside when not trekking or climbing in distant mountain regions. A prolific compiler of guidebooks, his first title for Cicerone Press appeared in 1978 (Walks & Climbs in the Pyrenees - now in its fourth edition); this is his 25th book for the same publisher, with others being researched at present. A member of the Alpine Club, Austrian Alpine Club and Outdoor Writers' Guild, his passion for mountains in particular and the countryside in general remains undiminished after 40 years of activity, and he regularly travels throughout Britain to share that enthusiasm through his lectures. Check him out on www.kevreynolds.co.uk.

Author Profile
A lifelong passion for the countryside in general, and mountains in particular, drives Kev's desire to share his sense of wonder and delight in the natural world through his writing, guiding, photography and lecturing. Spending several months each year among various high mountain regions researching guidebooks, makes him The Man with the World's Best Job; a title he aims to keep by remaining active for another 100 years at least. Kev has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Cicerone since the 1970s, producing walking and trekking guides to the Pyrenees, Alps and Himalaya, as well as walking guides for Kent, Sussex and the Cotswolds and he has several more books in the pipeline. A frequent contributor to outdoor magazines, he also writes and illustrates brochures for national tourist authorities and travel companies. When not away in the mountains, Kev lives with his wife in a small cottage among what he calls 'the Kentish Alps' with unrestricted walking country on the doorstep. But he also travels throughout Britain during the winter months to share his love of the places he writes about through a series of lectures. Check him out on www.kevreynolds.co.uk

Synopsis
Exploring the Sussex Downs and East Hampshire Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the official "South Downs Way" leads the walker the 100 miles (160km) between Eastbourne and Winchester. The route follows the northern escarpment for much of the way and rarely descends to habitation except where river valleys interrupt the regular course of the Downs. The route links many ancient and historical tracks, passing many sites of particular interest to those with a thirst for the past, but the main joy is the appreciation and recognition of this surprisingly secretive land that will please and delight any walker. It contains details of the walk split into 12 daily stages. It includes days that delve into a rural heartland, others that follow streams and rivers and those that follow the glistening sea on one side, flanked by sheep-grazed downland on the other. It is illustrated with OS mapping and the author's own full-colour photographs. It is part of a two-book series on the North and South Downs Ways.
