Nominations for William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award 2000 will be in October and the winning title will be announced on Monday 27 November 2000 with a £10,000 prize.
William Hill has sponsored the Sports Book of the Year Award since 1989 when the inaugural winner was 'True Blue' by Daniel Topolski and Patrick Robinson - a book subsequently turned into a movie.
The award is now firmly established with publishers and the media alike and - from past experience - the competition generates considerable publicity and additional sales for winning entries.
With ten years under its belt the Sports Book of the Year Award is on a par with the literary world's most respected Awards, such as the Whitbread Prize and the Booker Prize. Indeed it has become widely known as the Bookie Prize.
With a £10,000 prize package on offer to the winning author, the prestige of winning the William Hill Sports Book of the Year can subsequently more than double sales of the winning entry.
The strength of the judging panel, which in 1999 includes founder members Ian Wooldridge, Cliff Morgan and Chairman John Gaustad, Proprietor of Sportspages bookshop - together with Frances Edmonds and John Inverdale - guarantees that the winning book has been subjected to the most rigorous scrutiny.
The great majority of the previous winners of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award are still in print - testimony to their quality and longevity.
