Manu, Alexander
Alexander Manu is the Director of the Beal Centre for Strategic Creativity, Professor and Chair of Industrial Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the founder of Axis Group International, a design, development and applied research consultancy established in 1980 in Toronto. Alexander is involved in the development of strategic intellectual property and pre competitive business and product concepts that integrate a broad range of skills in the areas of Conceptual Design, Intellectual Property, User Interaction, Ideal Experience Mapping and Industrial Design. He specializes in the application of play behavior in innovation strategies, competitive analysis, trend mapping, new business models and the creation of compelling user experiences for companies as diverse as Motorola, LEGO, Whirlpool, McGrawHill Ryerson, Aim Funds and Bank of Nova Scotia. In parallel with his teaching and consulting work, Alexander Manu has been involved in an exceptional and sustained activity as an international lecturer, being invited over the past 15 years as a keynote speaker at some of the most prestigious international conferences organized around the world. He has given over 100 lectures in 22 countries, a unique effort amongst his peers and the result of a focused and recognized passion towards discovering and sharing new methods. Alexander has originated the concept of ToolToy, a methodology for the development of physical models that integrate the characteristics of play value into products, services and system features. He is the author the books: "ToolToys: Tools with an Element of Play", 1995, and "The Big Idea of Design", 1999 as well as of over 20 articles published in national and international periodicals. Alexander was also the Conceptual and Curatorial Consultant for the exhibition "ToolToys", which with eight showings in five countries has become the most successful design exhibition of the past decade. A past president of the Association of Chartered Industrial Designers of Ontario, he was elected twice on the board of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). Alexander Manu is a past member of various advisory boards active at government levels in Canada and the Far East and has consulted on design strategy for the Department of Canadian Heritage, the China External Trade Development Council and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. He is presently on the Advisory Board of the Japan Institute of Design (Tokyo) and Design for the World (Barcelona), an international NGO that provides and promotes humanitarian design solutions. Since 1984 Alexander Manu has been a guest lecturer at over 30 distinguished post secondary institutions around the world. Alexander received his Master of Decorative Arts (MDA- Industrial Design) in 1978, from the Institute of Fine Arts of Bucharest, Romania. For his contribution to the development of the visual arts, he has been elected an Academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA).
