Hackett, Tony
Tony Hackett spent the early part of his life living in various towns and villages in Leicestershire. The son of a police officer he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 and spent the next ten years travelling the world, in the process visiting 61 countries from Greenland to Argentina and the USA to Turkey. In 1959, he left the RN and with his wife Sylvia, became managers of a public house in the town of Irthlingborough. Their next venture was to take a brewery tenancy in the village of Woodford and from there to a town centre hotel in Towcester, again as tenants. All their establishments were in Northants. After 15 years in the trade, they realised their ambition and purchased a free house in the picturesque village of Blakesley, four miles from Towcester, where they spent a memorable 22 years. In between being the mainstay of their demanding lives, Sylvia still found time to bring up their three sons, Stephen, Timothy and Michael. A keen sportsman, Tony was able to put his love of many sports to good effect in the successful running of their licensed premises.
