| | John Fante was born in 1909 into an impoverished Italian-American family in Colorado. In 1930 he set out for Los Angeles where he scraped out a living doing odd jobs in order to support his chosen profession. Eventually he achieved significant critical attention with works such as Wait Until Spring, Bandini, Ask The Dust, and 1933 Was a Bad Year and earned comparisons to the likes of Sherwood Anderson. He also worked regularly as a screenwriter and received acclaim for his screenplay Full of Life. He was stricken with Diabetes in 1955 which brought about his eventual blindness. He died at 74 in 1983. |
