| | | Philip Algar, B.Sc. (Econ.) F.I.J., author of 'GOODBYE OLD CHAP, A life at sea in war and peace', has written five previous books. For many years, as a freelance editor and writer, he contributed regularly to UK and overseas publications on energy, economics and crisis management. He also wrote a regular and humorous column, on business topics, for a national newspaper and for a business magazine, but is now concentrating on writing books.
GOODBYE OLD CHAP is the story of his father, a Merchant Navy captain, and his life at sea which spanned two world wars and a long period of imprisonment in Germany. This book draws on contemporary diaries, some dating back to 1912, and others kept secret from his father’s captors. The story of an ordinary man in an extraordinary century is put into perspective by the addition of background information on some of the economic, military and political factors that influenced the life of his father and many millions of others.
Algar’s satire on office life and business, WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, drew on his earlier experience as an economist in multinational companies and then as a journalist and a crisis management consultant.
Apart from journalism, Algar has gained substantial experience as a broadcaster and lecturer on energy economics. He has also worked in 23 countries, teaching hundreds of companies on how to handle the media challenge during an emergency.
He has had two books on crisis management published by the Financial Times. His third, YOUR PROBLEM, OUR STORY, a management guide to handling emergencies and the media, has just been published by Matfield Books.
